S
taphylococcus aureus or more popularly
known as golden staph is a type of bacterium that can result
in a whole host of infections, from mild to life threatening.
Normally found in the nose and skin, it does not cause any
problems until it gets under the skin so to speak.
Golden staph is scientifically known as methicillin resistant
staphylococcus aureaus. The bacteria have become immune to
the effects of many kinds of antibiotics such as methicillin
and amoxicillin. The minor staph infections include pimples,
boils or other skin infections. The more serious effects of
golden staph infections is blood poisoning, also known as
sepsis or lung infections. An MRSA infection presents itself
as skin lesions with abscesses and carbuncles. The only way
to find out if the staph infection is MRSA is to have the
pus from the site sent for testing in a laboratory.
Every two to three people are carriers of the golden staph.
As colonies, the bacteria remains dormant, without any effects
in the nose and skin areas of healthy individuals. Other areas
that are known concentrations is in the axilla region, or
armpits, groin area and under skin folds of the body.
Golden staph is transmitted by skin on skin contact or by
touching contaminated areas. The bacteria also thrives in
individuals who have poor personal hygiene and allowing undressed
wounds exposed to the elements. The open wound would be a
prime target for the infection by golden staph.
The following are some of the infections that golden staph
causes when they enter the skin or the bloodstream.
- Boils and abscesses.
The golden staph attacks the break in the skin or the hair
follicle causing infection.
- Impetigo. This golden
staph infection presents itself with crusted skin and usually
attacks newborn babies and school children.
- Meningitis. Golden staph, once it enters the bloodstream
can cause an infection of the brain’s membranous lining,
causing inflammation and brain distress.
- Pneumonia. Once golden staph bacteria enters the lungs,
it can cause infection resulting in the production of pus
in the lung area that would result in pneumonia.
- Septic phlebitis. Golden staph, once entering the skin,
can result in the infection of a vein and inflammation of
the vein.
- Endocarditis. The infection of the heart valves can be
the result of golden staph infection entering the blood
stream and attacking the heart valves.
The inherent quality of golden staph is that it is resistant
to antibiotics. This is most probably the result of genetic
mutation as antibiotics that was once able to kill the bacteria
is now unable to treat the golden staph and even allows the
bacteria to flourish. Another factor that has been identified
as the cause of this kind of drug resistant bacteria is the
overuse of disinfectants. This elevates golden staph into
a form of super bug that is fatal to some with weakened immune
systems. Left unchecked, the virulence and the contagious
nature can become a serious public health problem for many
years to come.
