O
ne of the most painful scenarios
is seeing a loved one getting sick with an illness that has
no known cure. This is a reality that is so very present as
many contagious viruses and pathogens with many that can cause
debilitation and even death. Staphylococcus infections are
very contagious, and even more dangerous is the dreaded MRSA
staph infection.
MRSA is Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus has been
considered as one of the most dangerous strains of the innocuous
staphylococcus bacteria. This strain developed because of
the overuse of antibacterial medication and the improper treatment
of the infectious bacteria. Over time, the staphylococcus
bacteria developed an immunity to common medication and currently
only a few highly focused medicines are able to manage the
spread of the disease.
MRSA is often found on a person’s skin or nasal passages
and disease can easily be passed on from one person to another.
Even the slightest contact or even the vaguest cough can easily
spread the disease. MRSA has been declared a superbug because
of its devastating effects as well as the ease of transmission.
The more cunning aspect of MRSA is that not only can sick
people transmit it. Nowadays, the bacteria can also be carried
and spread by healthy individuals. It enters the body through
an open and exposed pore or through breaks in the skin. Once
it enters the bloodstream, it multiplies rapidly resulting
in a breakdown of the cells as the bacteria runs rampant in
the body. Since there are no medications to effectively combat
the disease, the body weakens and eventually the individual
succumbs to death.
These kinds of infections are often found in hospitals and
elderly care homes. This is because of the weakened immune
system allows the staphylococcus to breed into an antibiotic
resistant strain. In recent years, the MRSA has appeared outside
these nursing homes making it more dangerous. It has even
become present in individuals who have not been confined to
hospitals or had surgery in the past year or healthy individuals
contracting the disease. There has been a significant increase
in MRSA infections in communities and the numbers continue
to increase. The infection thrives in high-density areas with
poor sanitation making close quarters its most effective way
to transmit from one host to another.
As it has been established that MRSA is contagious, then
how can the spread of this superbug be contained? The first
and most effective way is through proper hygiene. Simple steps
as washing your hands, keeping wounds clean as well as properly
dressed are sure ways to halt the spread of the contagion.
Personal items also need to be kept personal, as these are
the best carriers for the pathogen. Having MRSA is not a light
matter to be brushed aside as you need immediate medical attention
to properly manage this. Furthermore, knowledge is power thus
awareness as to the pernicious effects of the disease when
properly disseminated can effectively help in managing and
controlling the spread of the MRSA infection.
