RSA is the acronym for Methicillin
Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. This is a highly specialized
bacterial strain of staphylococcus that was borne forth from
the improper antibiotic medication and treatment. MRSA has
developed from being a highly controlled pathogen limited
to medical care facilities into an infection that is present
in the community. The density of people together with the
high probability of its spread makes MRSA both a health problem
as well as a catastrophe about to occur.
There are many signs and symptoms of MRSA infections in an
individual. The bacteria are able to get entry into the body
through a cut or scrape first appearing as skin infection.
The most common sign is a single red bump that looks like
a pimple, pustule or boil or even a cluster of these bumps.
The area of the infection also becomes reddish, swollen, warm
to the touch and painful. These signs often occur in areas
of visible skin trauma or areas where hair follicles grow.
Left untreated, MRSA infections develop into much more dangerous
illnesses. These include shortness of breath, fever and chills
as the bacteria spreads throughout the body. The infection
can result in sepsis, meningitis, endocarditis and pneumonia.
Community associated MRSA is much more dangerous in children
because of the underdeveloped immune systems. Thus it is important
to examine your child each and every day for scrapes and cuts
they may have acquired during playtime. If you see any, you
must clean it right away and dress the wound in order to prevent
the bacteria from entering the body. If any of the signs and
symptoms of a MRSA infection presents itself, do not hesitate
to take your child to a medical practitioner for further examination.
The ability of the MRSA to resist a certain class of antibiotics
has made it a problem to find the cure for this kind of infection.
MRSA is able to thrive in an environment filled with beta-lactam
antibiotics such as methicillin, penicillin and other common
antibiotics. This is further compounded by the development
of two major types of MRSA staph strains, namely HA-MRSA and
CA-MRSA. HA-MRSA comes from the hospital or medical facility
setting while CA-MRSA is one that can be found in the general
population. Another major issue as to MRSA is its high degree
of contagious effectivity. This means, both infected and healthy
individuals are able to infect others thus spreading the disease
throughout a large area in no time.
What then can be done at the first sign and symptom of a
MRSA infection? You need to clean the area immediately and
seek medical treatment. If after the initial treatment the
infection still is present, then you need to have a MRSA culture
done to determine the cause. You would need specialized antibiotics
should MRSA be found in your system as the infection may spread
that might lead to your painful and untimely demise.
So, in order to prevent any further injury or illness, you
need to be observant and be able to identify the signs and
symptoms of a MRSA infection. Prevention and early detection
are key factors to properly manage and cure a MRSA infection.
