But first, let me explain how this book came about ... let me take you back to when I first was diagnosed with MRSA. It was a day that truly changed my life.

“I Gave Birth To My Son In January And Contracted MRSA In My Blood And Almost Died.”

I gave birth to my son in January 2007 and contracted MRSA in my blood and almost died. My son also contracted MRSA a few days after his birth on his skin. My son and I were in the hospital for a month after his birth. I ended up getting 5 additional surgeries to the c-section. I was on a wound vac and vanco and batriband, minocycline, bactrim. I tried so many drugs and never felt right and the MRSA would always come back.

“I was on antibiotics and IV's for 7 months and nothing worked. I was getting so frustrated!”

Once home I went straight to the internet for any information on MRSA. I found lots of clinical sites, which spoke about “Vancomycin intermediate-resistant” and “staphylococci skin colonization”. I felt like I was learning a whole new language. I became quite frustrated and confused with the huge volume of information that was there, especially when so much of it was written in medical jargon. Im certainly no doctor, all I wanted were some straight forward answers to help me!

Then there were those websites selling all sorts of herbs and potions, and promising miraculous cures. The cynic in me said “I guess if people are desperate they’ll try anything”. I wondered if I would get to the stage of trying these alternative therapies, and if so, how I would choose between them.

“It was at this stage that a friend told me about a book she had written.”

She had had personal experience with MRSA (with a family member) and at the time, she explored many options regarding treatment and did a lot of research. To me that showed extraordinary strength of character, and yet here were these seven “ordinary” people finding this strength inside themselves. I loved the way they shared in their stories, how they kept positive even at the lowest moments. It seemed to me reading all the stories that this was the key to their survival. It wasn’t just the illness itself or the antibiotic treatments. It was their attitudes to their infections. I read things that I hadn’t found anywhere else.
